UNIVERSITY OF VALLADOLID http://www.uva.es

Our University is situated in the Autonomous Region of Castilla y León, which was once part of the ancient kingdom of Castilla. It played a leading role in important events such as the discovery of the new world five centuries ago. It also played an outstanding role in the economic, political and cultural scene in the modern Europe.

At present, Valladolid is the economic, political and cultural centre in our region. This city is the centre of the political activity at the Cortes de Castilla y León (Regional Parliament), the economic development, both industrial and agricultural, and the cultural life in which the University is a leader.

INEA wishes all the foreign students arriving in our city would find scientific, cultural and human values in our institution, and welcomes you in the hope that we can meet all your University-related needs.

If you need any further information, do not hesitate to contact us.

I.- VALLADOLID AND ITS SURROUNDINGS.

1.- Castilla y León (Castile and Leon)

The Autonomous Region of Castilla y León is one of the 17 Autonomous Regions that constitutionally and geographically make up the kingdom of Spain. It is situated in the northern plateau of the Iberian Peninsula. lt has an area of 95,000 sq. km and its population is 2.7m. inhabitants. It is the region with the largest territory, not only in Spain but also of the European Union.

The Region of Castilla y León is divided into nine provinces: Avila, Burgos, León, Palencia, Salamanca, Segovia, Soria, Valladolid, and Zamora, taking up almost a fifth of the Spanish territory.

The political union of Castilla y León was established during the 13h century, from 1230 onwards, during the reign of Fernando III, El Santo.

It is from the 15th onwards, after the wedding of Isabel I of Castilla and Fernando V of Aragón (the Catholic Kings), when both kingdoms were united and the recovery of the present day Spanish territory, which was still party under Moorish domination, finished.

The 16th century was a period of great prosperity for Castilla y León. This was mainly based on the richness of the agriculture and the stockbreeding, and the development of a booming textile industry. The great resources coming from the conquest of America, in which people from both, Castilla y León, were actively involved, played also an important role.

2.- Valladolid

Valladolid city is situated in the centre of the Autonomous Region of Castilla y León. It is 200 km. Northwest from Madrid, and it is the capital of the region with about 370,000 inhabitants.

The "Governors City", that is to say, Belad Valed, as called in the reunification documents, became an important city, after the unification of the crowns of Castilla y León, during the reign of king Alfonso VI (1074). It would become more and more important since then.

It was a small centre for a few years, founded by Pedro Ansúrez, situated on the left bank of the river Pisuerga, close to its confluence with the Duero river.

This is where Fernando III El Santo, was crowned. He would definitively unite the two kingdoms (Castilla y León). Also María de Molina, married to Sancho IV "el Bravo", reigned here. A number of important events took place in Valladolid: the wedding ceremony of the, later, "Catholic Monarchs"; the death of Christopher Columbus; the birth of Felipe II (1527), King of Spain; and Carlos I brought his court to this city.

During the reigns of Felipe II and Felipe III, the court settled in Valladolid and it became the capital of Spain. Two important monuments date back from this period: the National Sculpture Museum (former St. Gregorio College), which is one of the most important museums in the world, and, 5 km. from the city, the General Archive of the Kingdom of Spain, in Simancas. This is where a huge amount of important documents of the history of Spain, from the Middle Ages up to 19th century, are kept.

With such background it is not surprising that Valladolid city, surrounded by fields of rich cereal production and concerned with different commercial and industrial activities, had a great economic development, and therefore, flourished outstandingly and got filled with magnificent palaces and splendid works of art.

Among the monuments we can see St. Pablo Church, Santa Cruz College, St. Gregorio College (National Sculpture Museum), The Cathedral (by Juan Herrera), St. Pedro Church, and finally the University as an important monument. Many other churches or religious buildings can be visited: The Augustinian Friars Convent, Las Descalzas Reales, De la Cruz Church, La Magdalena, Nuestra Señora de las Angustias, St. Benito el Real, St. Felipe Neri, St. Lorenzo, St. Martin, St Salvador, St. Ana, St. María la Antigua, Santiago....

Valladolid and its surroundings are recognised as having the purest Castilian accent of the language. Prestigious writers and poets in the past and at present, such us Miguel de Cervantes, José Zorrilla, Gaspar Núñez de Arce, Rosa Chacel and Miguel Delibes, were born here or are still living in this city.

In addition, Valladolid, as capital of the region of Castilla y León, is full of students who at weekends create a specially cheerful and enjoyable atmosphere in the city. The students associations organise varied cultural, sport and entertainment events throughout the year. At the weekend they can be found in the evening all over the central area of the city, around the University, Santa María la Antigua Church and the Plaza Mayor (main square).

Valladolid province is widely known in international circles for its great variety of wines. Roast lamb and an excellent soup is a clear example of our gastronomy, also offering typical dishes of Castilian cuisine.

Valladolid is an interesting city for students although it is a bit cold in January and February when the fog surrounds the city as if it was taken from a fairy tale.

6.- Residence Permit In Spain

A residence permit is needed because you will stay in Spain for more than 3 months (anyway, check at your own University if it is compulsory to get it).

In order to obtain the student visa at the Spanish Embassy or Consulate in your country before arriving in Spain, follow these steps:

1. Go to the Police Station with your passport and ask for the N.I.E. (Identification number for Foreign Students). Within 8 days you will receive your N.I.E..

2. Open a saving account at a bank with at least 70,000 Ptas. You will need your N.I.E. and your passport to open your saving account. The bank will provide a certificate showing your financial situation.

3. Register at University

4. Medical insurance.

The student will then ask for the residence permit, showing all the necessary documents (original documents and two photocopies) and three passport-sized photographs, from the Documentation Service at Valladolid Police Station (Fray Luis de Granada street).

IMPORTANT: These documents must be translated into Spanish.

[Main Menu]

7.-National Health Service

The European Union countries have agreements with the Spanish National Health Service, which will cover the medical care. Before leaving their countries, students must obtain a E-111 form (or E-128) for their temporary residence in Spain, which will be provided by their own National Health Service.

It is essential that foreign students bring medical insurance from their own countries. Those students without a National Health Service in their countries will have to show, at the International Relations Service of the University of Valladolid, that they have a medical insurance certificate of a different kind (private, etc .... ) which may be obtained when arriving in Valladolid.

Those citizens of the E.U., and those from countries that have signed bilateral agreements concerning Health Services, which may need any assistance during their temporary stay in Spain, will only have to go directly to the National Health Centres in the town where they are living.

We enclose a list of all the Health Centres in the Province. If the student went to any other province, he would be able to get this information at the Province Health Service Organisation (INSALUD) in the province.

To receive medical treatment, students will have to show a document (E-111 or E-128) - their medical insurance certificate that allows him or her to receive medical treatment in Spain - and a photocopy of both, the certificate and the identification paper. The original document will be given back to you, although the Centre will keep the photocopy.

II.-UNIVERSITY OF VALLADOLID

1.- History

University of Valladolid dates from the 13 th century; it is, then, the second University in Spain and one of the oldest Universities in Europe. It is made up of several buildings, like the Faculty of Arts, whose baroque façade is from 17 th century, or Santa Cruz Palace, designed in 1484.

It is part of a great intellectual movement that appeared in Western Europe during the 12th and 13th centuries.

The origins of University of Valladolid date back to the end of the 13 th century. A document signed by king Sancho IV of Castilla in 1293 is the first written reference. This intellectual revival takes place at the same time as the urban expansion and the material progress of big Castilian towns like Valladolid.

At the beginning, the different "Academias" established here taught some subjects like Grammar, Arithmetic, Latin and Holy Scriptures. Later, the city was granted both royal authorisation and the papal bull for this centre. In 1346, Pope Clement VI, on behalf of king Alfonso XI, grants the title of "General Studies" to the subjects already being taught in Valladolid, although, of course, it was not possible to study Theology, since it was only a privilege of Paris University. At the end of the Schism, Pope Martin V granted Valladolid in 1417, the long-awaited Faculty. At the same time the monarchs provided the Centre with funds which allowed a certain economic independence.

In the 16th century, the University of Valladolid achieved the greatest splendour when it was counted among the three, main universities of the Kingdom, with Salamanca and Alcalá. The first statutes, written in Latin, appeared in 1517 and later in Spanish. The Medicine School and the Faculty of Law were soon relatively well-known, backed up by the nearby Chancery. At the end of the 15th century, Cardinal Mendoza founded Santa Cruz College, which from its beginning was well-known among the Spanish University institutions.

In 1770, during the reign of Carlos III, the Spanish Universities were completely reformed. Although this reform was never totally accomplished, there was a new atmosphere of change in the following decades. From the beginning of the 19th century until 1857, the old University, which had been governed by the scholastic spirit and characteristics enjoying certain independence, had become a secular, liberal and centralised University. This change contributed to train lawyers and physicians mostly, which shows the high level achieved.

Inside Santa Cruz Palace, which is today the headquarters of the rectors office and University offices, there is a wonderful library. Here you can find "incunables", manuscripts, rare editions and the splendid Beato de Valcavado from 970. There are other University buildings like: Santa Cruz College Hospedería (Inn) from the 17th century ; the beautiful Chancery Prison, which is now a library, from the 16th century ; La Casa del Estudiante, an old inn which is now the administrative centre of the University, etc.

The present day University has a large campus with different buildings for the various faculties : Arts, Law, Science, Economics, Engineering, Architecture, Medicine, Teaching Training, etc.

The technical studies have a leading role in this century. The University of Valladolid, situated in a middle size city with liberal tendency, has quickly become the University with the highest number of students in the Autonomous Region of Castilla y León. There are 38,000 students and 2,000 teachers distributed among the University centres in the three provinces, during the 1996-1997 course.

4.- Library

The INEA LIBRARY began the formation of its bibliographic collection in the sixties, and its history has always been connected with that of the College.

Both the donations received from institutions and individuals related to the agrarian world, as well as the acquisitions by the Centre have contributed to the specialisation and uniqueness of the collection, which contains a great number of works difficult to find in other libraries.

At present the Library contains 11,000 monographs, 1000 Technical Projects and 110 different periodic publications.

The orientation of the collection is markedly technical, with a strong inclination towards agrarian activities, management of agrarian companies, and the environment. The special care for the development and future of the rural world is worthy of note.

The computerisation of the library, initiated in 1993 following criteria compatible with new information treatment techniques and its own thematic index, facilitates better utilisation and diffusion of the collection, as well as a future connection with other library centres.

Head of Studies: Mr Ricardo Miranda Larrucea
E-mail: rmiranda@inea.uva.es
Web: http://www.inea.uva.es/agenda/prac.htm

INEA (University School of Agrarian Engineering), in a desire to improve the academic formation of their Agrarian Engineering students and their capacity to face their profession in the best professional, technical and human conditions possible, has promoted the development of the Apprenticeships and Foreign Relations Studies. The principal functions of this area are:

Co-ordination of the programmes of the various apprenticeship groups carried out in the different subjects, whether in the laboratory, field trips or the classrooms themselves

Search for companies to accept students who wish to perform voluntary apprenticeship periods, for which applications are accepted at the beginning of every course. The students must indicate their preferences as to region, activity and period.
